Construction of City’s Next Roundabout Starting Soon

Another New Plymouth intersection is about to be improved with the installation of a roundabout.

Construction of the roundabout at the intersection of Tukapa Street and Omata Road will begin near the end of February and take 12 weeks to complete.

“The roundabout will reduce waiting times for traffic using Omata Road, which is a component of the city’s inland arterial route one, and improve safety for all users of this intersection,” says Roading Programming Engineer Steve Bowden.

“We ask drivers to take particular care at this intersection during the construction period and if possible use an alternative route, as there will be delays which unfortunately are unavoidable.”

The roundabout will have separate lanes on both approaches of Tukapa Street for straight-through and turning traffic.

Cyclists heading west on Tukapa will have a section of dedicated off-road cycle lane, while those heading east will be able to share a section of footpath with pedestrians.

The project has necessitated land acquisition from adjacent properties to make room for the roundabout.

This work is part of an intersection improvement programme which has seen roundabouts installed at the intersections of Frankley/Brois/Waimea and Tukapa/Waimea within the last three years.
